Massage Therapists: Feeling Burned Out? Rejuvenate with These Tips

Being a Massage Therapist is a rewarding, yet demanding career. Even if you are passionate about your job, pure love for this career can only sustain you for so long. Massage therapists are particularly prone to burnout due to the physical and emotional strain. Keep the passion and enthusiasm for your career alive by avoiding job burnout with these tips.

Rest, Relax and Sleep

Sometimes the simplest suggestion is the most helpful. You need to let yourself unwind and rejuvenate. Whatever your situation, you need some time each day to do whatever it is that helps you relax. Meditate, listen to your favorite music, do yoga – find a little time each day to rest your mind.

When the day is over, getting a good night’s sleep is one of the best ways to avoid burnout. Without sufficient sleep, you are prone to fatigue, headaches, memory loss, depression and many other health issues. If getting a full night of sleep seems impossible, try a nap. A study published in the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism in 2015, suggests that even a 30-minute nap after only two hours of sleep can reverse many of the negative impacts of poor sleep.

Continue Learning and Growing

Just because you are a licensed massage therapist doesn’t mean you should stop learning. It can be easy to become weary in your career when everything stays the same. Take the initiative to enroll in continuing education classes for massage as well as your other interests. Have you considered advancing into management? Stay Healthy

Many times, the feeling of burnout is a sign you need to take care of yourself. Eating right, exercising and caring for your body can make a big difference in how you feel. Take time to write down everything you eat, your exercise and your recovery activities for a few days. Are you getting the right nutrients? Are you not exercising enough or maybe working out too much? You know how important the right balance is to stay healthy.

As part of your health routine, don’t forget you also need a massage. Make sure you are scheduling time to reap the benefits that you give to so many others. Practice what you preach and you may feel that burnout slip away.
