Are you passionate about helping others look and feel their best? Then you just might have what it takes to become a licensed Skin Therapist. The professional esthetics industry is a challenging and rewarding field for those who enjoy interacting closely with others, and giving them the services and products they need to achieve youthful, healthy skin. If you are considering this career, let us help you succeed in your endeavors. Here are the first steps to becoming a successful Skin Therapist and what you can expect in this exciting and growing industry.

Education, Training and Certification

First and foremost, to become a licensed Skin Therapist you must meet your state’s requirements for licensing. Each state’s licensing requirements are a little different, but all include attending a licensed school for esthetics. For example, in Texas to become a licensed Skin Therapist, you must complete 750 hours of classroom instruction at an approved esthetics school, then pass the written and practical exams to receive your license. However, other states may have additional or different requirements.

Your education will include learning esthetic skills such as skin anatomy and physiology, waxing, facials, body wraps and make-up application. You will also learn safety and sanitation requirements, business skills and general industry practices. These skills are the basics you need to know to begin your career; however, additional training and continuing education in esthetics throughout your career is key to keeping up with industry trends and to maintaining a successful career.

Finding Your First Position as a Licensed Skin Therapist

Once you have completed your education and have been licensed in your state as a Skin Therapist or esthetician, you can begin your exciting career. You have various options for where you may work: retail settings, salons, spas, booth rental, medical spas and even in the travel industry. However, not all companies give you the same advantages to begin building your career. You will want to find a company that will provide you with an atmosphere to grow your career and nurture your aspirations.
